Grapes Vaults

Date of photo: 1960s

The Grapes Vaults was situated on Grey Street.

I can remember two things about this Public House
1. It remained a men only establishment right up until the mid 1970s when Parliament passed an act stopping this, as far as i'm aware it was the only men only Public House left in the city.
2. It comprised two rooms, the bar which was frequented by older street hardened men that you really didn't want to make eye contact with and those trying to sell goods of all descriptions to any person who happened to walk in (you didn't ask where the goods came from!). The other room was a small lounge which still had a bell system on the wall to summon the bartender who having taken your order would return and serve it from a tray, I believe this was common practice for a lounge bar in the earlier part of the century but not in the early 1970s.

I was in the Grapes when the law changed to ban all male pubs. A load of feminists came in and the bar staff just didn’t see or acknowledge them. They served everybody but the feminists, it was hilarious
