Golden Tiger

The Golden Tiger was situated on Pilgrim Street. This pub closed in the 1980s and has now been demolished.

I visited this pub during the 60’s/70’s. From what I can remember, it was a small area with a pin table on one side, a half crown or two bob bit cemented to the floor, and run by a really hard gay man called Viv! There were pictures of Viv dressed up as a woman around the bar and he had a pansy voice! I’d gone there for a bet and it was difficult to look him in the eye when ordering my pint! At the back there was a disco! I read that the publican Viv was murdered in a pub in Gateshead in the 90’s real name George Gill, something which I never knew. Shame that the pub was demolished, another landmark destroyed!!
