The pub dates from the mid to late 18thy
century. It was on what was from 1300's to 1950's the main route into
commercial Yarmouth leading to Hall Quay and the fish market. with easy
access to the market place as well. Clearly a coaching inn and a place to be
picked up and dropped off. An important inn in Yarmouth just inside the
North Gate with a weigh bridge originally dating from 1820. The one there at
the moment is likely to be much later. There are signs that the weighbridge
plate has been made shorter which is unusual. (See your existing photo) I
suspect that the original plate was short (cart size) but then extended for
some reason and then shortened again. You can see the shortening under the
front wheels of the white car. The current plate is clearly from a time when
most of it's use was from horse drawn traffic judging by the large knobbles
on it to assist horse drawn vehicles. Probably about the turn of the century
(1900-10).
The small narrow window just to the right of the black central downpipe was
the weighbridge operator's window so that they could look out to make sure
the cart or whatever being weighed was totally on the plate. The steelyard
(pronounced still-yudd) for the 'bridge would have been immediately behind
the window.
When I went there the pub in the 70s-90's it was elegant but quiet and the
steelyard had gone |
