The Brunswick Hotel was situated at 149
King Street. |
|
This building was converted from two houses in
1750 to form a boarding school. In 1886 it became a temperance hotel. It was
first issued with an "On Licence" in 1953. During the 70's the Brunswick
Hotel was used a lot by the American Oil Riggers. They would stay there
whenever they were ashore. The main bar was in the basement and was a hub
for Country and Western music. Frequently they would come in and spend the
next several days in various states of inebriation and consuming vast
quanities of steaks before heading back out to the oil and gas rigs in the
North Sea. They were noted for their generosity in buying beer, especially
to hard up young trainees looking for somebody else to pay. |
