Load Of Hay

The Load Of Hay was situated at 144 Praed Street. This pub is now used as a restaurant.

My father moved to London from Cork, Ireland in 1934 staying until 1938. The Load of Hay, Praed Street became the local for him and two pals from Cork, Tommy Allen and Dan Butler. There was no Guinness available in those days and seeing a dark beer, mild, being served they chose that over the more suspicious looking amber coloured bitter. Of course mild was much weaker than Guinness and they complained about having to adjust their belts to fit more in.
