Rose & Crown

The Rose & Crown was situated on Putney High Street, next to St Mary's Church, Putney Bridge. Licensing records show it open from 1786. Closed due to unspecified 'nuisance' once the White Lion, opposite, reopened in 1887. The last publican was a Mrs Breach. Demolished in the late 19th century.
In the introduction to his autobiographical masterpiece, 'Goodbye to all of that', Robert Graves recalls one of his earliest memories being his meeting Algernon Charles Swinburne on Wimbledon Common. Swinburne, it seems, went to the Rose and Crown every day, for his pint of beer.
