I lived in this pub from 1955 - 1966, my parents were tenants. The Windmill enjoyed lots of custom from the men (mostly) who worked the warehouses and wharves on the Thames. Weekdays were always busy but w/ends were a lot quieter. The early sixties and thereafter saw that daily trade diminish with the emergence of container freight dropping further towards the Thames estuary and the closure of warehouses etc. That pub was right across the road (Park St) from a major Courage brewing, bottling and distribution hub, all now gone. The Anchor on Bankside is still there; that too was a Courage house and in our day did business with the warehousemen etc. It was also quiet at weekends except for walkers, straying couples and groups on treasure hunts. The area was saturated in history being near the site of Shakespeare’s Globe theatre, the Clink prison, Southwark Cathedral, the Borough Market (in our day it was just a wholesale fruit and veg market) and London Bridge.
