The Oakley Arms was situated at 72 Oakley
Street. This pub closed c1918 and is long demolished. Oakley Street is now known as Baylis
Road. |

The pub was the scene of Edward Despard's arrest as well as
his possible political conspiracies. Since I used to spend much time in the
area I wanted to see if it still existed and came across your site; it
occurred to me that you might find the story relevant. Despard believed in
then-radical ideas like racial equality and universal suffrage; he was to be
