Elephant & Castle

The Elephant & Castle was situated at 1
Newington Butts. Not to be confused with the present-day pub of the same
name which is on a different site. This was the most famous of the three
pubs that once graced the famous South London intersection, along with The
Alfreds Head and The Rockingham Arms. First recorded in 1765, it was rebuilt
in 1818, and again in 1898 in a magnificent Victorian style complete with
turrets and a dome. It declined after World War II and was finally
demolished in 1959 as part of the area redevelopment. |
