The Mitre was situated at 145 Woolwich High
Street. |
|
My grandparents, Sam and Hetty Porter, used to
live at 3 Church Hill, Woolwich and between 1951 and 1955 having visited my
grandparents on a Saturday, my parents and I would walk home from Church
Hill, past St Mary’s Church to the 75 bus terminal at Woolwich power
station, pausing briefly, at the Mitre Pub where the door would be pushed
open so that my grandfather could come to the door to say goodnight and, I
can still remember the sound of the piano, the general noise of crowded bar
and the smell of stale beer, before my grandfather kissed me goodnight and
we went on our way back to Charlton. Despite the stale beer smell these are
still fond memories, particularly as my Grandfather died in 1955 and my
grandmother in 1977. |
