The Admiral was situated at 61 Frances
Street. This pub closed in the early 2000s and has now been demolished and
replaced by the small block of flats called Admiral House. |

Used to drink in this pub after work in the
1980's. One evening saw Jim Davidson in there having a pint with his father
who used to live locally! |

In about 1982 I was a young New
Zealander on my big OE in the UK. I applied for a live in bar/cellar man at
the Admiral pub in Frances street. Tom hired me and I lived with the family
there close to 12 months. They and the locals became close and I still to
this very day looking through my photos leaves an impression on me. The
elderly couple who had the pub were Tom and Bridget. A fantastic couple. I
think they may have had two daughters. We had a part time barman Phil and
Frank. Polly also worked there, and a relief manager Brian who came in from
time to time. There was also a green parrot Brian was his name, who had a
perch behind the bar. I did go back toward the end about 1986, and I think
by then Tom and Bridget may have retired. I too remember the famous comedian
entertainer Jim Davidson as a regular as he grew up there and never forgot
where he came from. Also if I remember rightly there may have been a bombing
up at The Red Lion just up the road. |
