The last landlord, James Holland, who
ran the pub from 1952-1962 is my boyfriend’s father. It closed its doors in
December 1962. He left to take ownership of The King’s Head in West Norwood
(82-84 Norwood High Street). James recalls that Max Bygraves used to
frequent the pub as the family lived nearby. The locals also included
members of the Talbot family, some of the last barge builders on the
Thames. If ships came in during the wee hours, dockers would help themselves
to drinks in the pub and leave behind a list of what they’d had, and
payment. James says this honesty system was never abused. |
