As a former Londoner it brings back
treasured memories of life in the East-End. I realise I know more of the pubs
mentioned here than I care to say !! The Roebuck in Lewisham was a « dive
bar » completely underground, and Indeed behind the Odeon whare Victor
Sylvesters Dance Hall was situated. During the dance-hall interval we(the
boys) would nip ‘round to the pub to whip-up some Dutch-courage in order to
ask the latest dance partner if, after the last dance, we could take her
home. Of course, the pub being very warm and cosy, we often didn’t get back
to the dance-hall. Really wonderful times |
