I lived in Ampthill Square just round the corner, my mum and dad used to frequent it on the odd night out out in late 1950s. i remember it was a typical brown glaze tiled building ( shame they knocked it down and put the eyesore that was later there) always a piano on the go, most people standing drinking and a seafood stall outside. i havent been able to find any photographs of ampthill square even though ' the man who never was' was filmed there. i lived there in 1950s. at least 3-4 families lived in each house with no bathroom and no hot water and one outside toilet for all families. We played out all day, at the time my parents had 7 children so there was no choice but to play out in all weathers. i an only remember enjoable times there even though my dad fell out the first floor window onto the basement below. he was saved by the fact he was drunk, he got up and walked back up basement stairs. my dad was supposedly cleaning the window, i often wondered whether my mum pushed him out!! no proof though and now they have both passed away.
