I was a regular drinker in the Milford Haven pub
at 214 Caledonian Road Islington in the mid 1970’s. I lived at 218! I was
heavily involved with the squatting movement in Caledonian Road when we took
over abandoned houses in early 1975. Initially there was much opposition to
us being in the area and confrontation too. However good sense prevailed and
we struck a deal with the publican (BILL) at the Milford Haven. We would all
drink exclusively at his pub if he could persuade his regulars to accept us
as neighbours and part of the local community. All went well and the pub
hummed.
I did get barred for a short while after a bit of fisticuffs. My solution
was to pop across to the Mitre diagonally across the road. I was able to mix
fairly freely with all the locals partly because of my New Zealand accent.
When I did return to the MIlford Haven I was asked where I had been. When I
told the regulars I had been across the road at the Mitre they were aghast.
Comments such as ‘they are a funny lot over there they are’ were the order.
My reply - how would you lot know as you have never been over there!!
I had my last drink in the Milford Haven one Sunday late in 1976. Bill and
his wife and daughters were as busy pulling pints as ever. I went to sea and
never returned for 22 years. Imagine my sadness when I wandered up
Caledonian Road from the Kings Cross tube station to my old haunts and found
the Milford Haven closed. I nearly cried. All I can say is God bless all
those who drank there in the good old days. |
