Red Lion

The Red Lion was situated at 132 Church Street. This log-established former Truman’s pub closed in early 2010.

This pub has now reopened. Practically certain this closed only for a rather detrimental refurbishment - I had a half of Harvey's Sussex Best in there about three weeks ago. It was open last Summer and I noticed it closed a couple of months back.

Sometime back in the seventies, the landlady and her sons that ran the Lion were Irish. Nice folk, don’t get me wrong, but one stormy night there was an almighty bang and the entire gable end (in the right of the picture) blew out into the side-road. Everyone assumed the worst, what with them being Irish, and the troubles and all..... but it was a lightning strike. She saw the funny side of it, we saw the inside of it!
