Lord Cecil

The Lord Cecil was situated at 42 Lower Clapton Road.

This pub was present by 1872 and was tied to the Courage Brewery.  By the 1990s it had a rather unsavoury reputation and, with Lower Clapton Road gaining the nickname ‘Murder Mile’ it was not on many people’s list of pubs to visit, leading to closure by July 2006.

When I first moved to London I lived in the nurses home at St Mark's Hospital, City Rd. I then moved into a flat with another nurse in Chart St before moving into a house-share in Clapton in 1987. I would drink at the Lord Cecil on occasion. The Landlord was very friendly and it was not uncommon for him to let a few of us drink 'after-hours' late into the night, playing card games and enjoying a pint! If I remember correctly, he did have a heart attack but made a recovery and returned to his duties as landlord.
