This pub was present by 1872 and was tied to the Courage Brewery. By the
1990s it had a rather unsavoury reputation and, with Lower Clapton Road
gaining the nickname ‘Murder Mile’ it was not on many people’s list of pubs
to visit, leading to closure by July 2006. |

When I first moved to London I lived in
the nurses home at St Mark's Hospital, City Rd. I then moved into a flat
with another nurse in Chart St before moving into a house-share in Clapton
in 1987. I would drink at the Lord Cecil on occasion. The Landlord was very
friendly and it was not uncommon for him to let a few of us drink
'after-hours' late into the night, playing card games and enjoying a pint!
If I remember correctly, he did have a heart attack but made a recovery and
returned to his duties as landlord. |
