This pub was built in 1863 to cash in on the popularity as a place of recreation of the Hackney Downs, across the road.  The Pickwick Cycling Club (the oldest surviving cycling club in the world) was founded here in 1870 and by 1877, Downs Football Club (later to become Clapton FC) had their HQ here.  By 1900, and probably earlier, it was a Whitbread Brewery pub.  Ownership had transferred to Ind Coope Taylor Walker by 1977 and the name was abbreviated to Downs for a while, before reverting to Downs Hotel in 2002.  The pub closed and was converted to residential use in 2007.
