The Queens Head was situated at 74 Commercial
Street.
This pub was present by 1862 and
closed before the 1980s, perhaps long before. It had been acquired by Hoare
& Co’s Brewery in 1926 and presumably later passed to Charrington’s with the
rest of that brewery’s estate. Due to its location, it is of course
associated with the ‘Jack
The Ripper’ murders, victim ‘Liz
Stride having drunk there shortly
before her death in 1888. |

There's another Jack the
Ripper link to this pub. In the early hours of 9th November 1888 a man
called George Hutchison claimed that he met the final victim, Mary Kelly,
walking on Commercial St. As they parted he saw her meet a well-dressed man
who she toolk back to her house. Hutchison claims he stood outside the
Queens Head as it had a lamp outside it and looked at the man who 'looked at
me stern' |
