Jolly Butchers

The Jolly Butchers was situated at 157 Brick Lane. This pub was established by 1839 and has had an interesting succession of names as follows:

1839: Turk & Slave
1842: Turkish Slave
1844: Turkish Head
1847 - 1875: Turk & Slave
1881 - 1986: Jolly Butchers

The leasehold was acquired by Truman’s Brewery in 1922 and the pub remained with Truman’s until its closure in the late-1980s.  The premises now serve as a coffee house.

John Maynard 1975 The saloon bar sold Truman's beers and was a normal bar, albeit mostly empty. The public bar, standing room only, sold very cloudy scumpy cider and was full of dossers out of their heads on cider at 10 pence per pint. Those were the days!
Jeff Mansfield 1963/1970 We took over the tenancy from J .Cook, I lived there and worked in Holborn. My father was Jack Mansfield, a bare knuckle fighter.
