Kings Arms

The Kings Arms was situated at 230 Mile End Road. This pub was present by 1830, at which time it included a ‘large concert hall’ and sold cider.  A short time later the manufacture of lemonade and soda water was a nice little side line for the pub.  By 1850, the concert hall had expanded further and the pub’s full name had become the Kings Arms Public House & Palace of Varieties, with seating for 200.  It was rebuilt in the later nineteenth century and became a Taylor Walker Brewery pub, passing to Ind Coope Brewery by the 1980s.  For many years the offices of the Dr Bernardo charitable organisation were in an upstairs room.  By 2006 the pub had been renamed Soma and had become something of a late-night dance venue.  This was predictably short-lived and the pub closed in 2007.  In 2010 it was converted to restaurant use.
