This pub opened in 1859, at which time it had its own in-house brewery. It
was acquired by Truman’s Brewery and rebuilt in 1895. By the 1980s it was a
Whitbread’s house. |

My Grandfather Ernest
Butterfield and his brother Arch (piano) performed in an upstairs room song
and dance (black and white minstrels). My mother helped her mother Ada make
sandwiches and carry them up to the pub for the interval. |

At the rear of the pub
but adjoining it was a large separate room which boasted two full size
snooker tables. Very popular. |

I was a barmaid. Wally was the
publican and his wife was Renee (I think) There was a garden in the
front which was popular in the summer. In the summer there was a large
block of ice on the counter around which they put drinks to cool as they
didn't have fridges. It was a regulars pub and people were specific to
the public, saloon bars or snooker room. I met my husband there. I
remember some of the regulars |
