The
New Gog was situated
at 38-40 Freemasons Road. This
was a Courage pub which closed in 2002. It was formerly called the Royal
Albert. |

I lived in Hartington rd just behind
this pub, We used to stand outside with our guy in a pushchair just before
bonfire night, waiting for the customers who’d had a drink and we’re feeling
generous we called out penny for the guy ( but hoped for more) They also had
Beanos ( coach pub crawls to the seaside) and when the coach was leaving
the Gog in the morning, us kids used to surround it and shout throw out your
mouldies and the men would throw coins out as they drove away, we’d all
scramble for them.
Also used to go in the off licence part for arrowroot biscuits from a glass
jar on the counter or smiths crops with the blue waxed paper twist of salt
inside. |

I have a black and white pic in my merchant Navy
scrapbook, of myself and 3 shipmates off the Shaw Saville ship the
Icenic prior to shipping out to Australia and New Zealand, seem to
remember supping my pint listening to "Have i the Right" blaring out of
the Jukebox, think it was no. 1 in the charts just then. |
