This pub was opened by my great-great
grandfather John Stemp around 1855. As I understand it, he had been living
in California USA and had returned home with a wife, child and money! He
built a house on Albert Road which was prone to flooding but he seems to
have realised that the new Royal Dock would alleviate the problem and allow
him to open the pub, appropriately named The California.
John Stemp died in 1872 and his son, John Nelson Stemp, took over the
business. For whatever reason, John Nelson left the California and opened
another pub at 52 Albert Road called
The Lads of the Village.
Whether the family ran both pubs I do not know. |
