The Islanders was situated at 3-5 Tooke Street.
This pub was present by 1858. Its
main claim to fame is that in 1885 it provided the HQ and changing rooms to
Millwall Football Club in the early days before they decamped south of the
River. At this time it was more generally known as “Sextons” after then
landlord Maurice John Sexton – the nickname continuing well after he had
gone and into the 1920s. The pub was
hit and destroyed in an air-raid in early hours of 7 September 1940 and
it was not rebuilt |
