The British Oak was situated at 28
Robin Hood Lane. This pub closed in 2007 and has now been demolished and
replaced by a commercial building. |

When I was a Young man, I lived
some 200 yards from this pub and my parents would be very regular customers.
My first experience of thais pub was when I told my mother tha I couldn’t
join them for a drink as I wouldn’t be home before closing time and she said
« it doesn’t matter, just Knock on the door if it’s closed… When I arrived
there was not a sound and no sign of life..I knocked, the curtain moved and
the door opened.. Everyone was singing and dancing..The juke box was going
full blast and so we indulged until the early hours… There were never any
problems with these « after-hours festivities » bacause half the Police in
Poplar were in there enjoying themselves… What wonderful moments of
conviviality and cameraderie…. |
