This pub was present by 1705 and by 1815 was owned by Thomas and Robert Pryor, brewers of Shoreditch – and by 1825 it had passed to Truman’s Brewery.  The pub was rebuilt in 1878 and the trustees of the adjacent school, with whom the pub seemed always to have had a fractious relationship, complained that the new building encroached by two and a half inches onto their property.  The 1926 landlord, W J Golding also happened to be chairman of Leyton Football Club, and in this year they won the FA Amateur Cup.  In 1929 the long-running dispute with the school was ended when the pub acquired the former school playground and built a new saloon bar and gardens.  Despite being popular and busy, the pub was in a poor condition by the early 2000s and went into a downward spiral as various ‘themes’ were picked up and then dropped until the pub closed in 2007.  The building has now become an ‘functions venue’.

Demolished in 2015, a Sainsburys Local store now stands on the site.
