My grandparents, Henry and Francis Hase,
ran the Still Vaults in Westlode St in the late 1940’s (I think) until 1965
or so. I used to spend holidays there as a child (we lived in Nottingham)
from around 1958 to 1965 when they moved to the Rose Inn. My grandmother ran
the B and B and my grandfather, Pop, ran the pub. There were a number of
characters that used to frequent the pub. I used to fish in the Welland
behind the fire station and catch eels and sell them in the pub for sixpence
each. Sometimes I’d be allowed to play bar billiards and drink shandies. One
afternoon a policeman came into the bar and I had to hide under the legs of
some of the patrons. |
