New Reindeer

The New Reindeer was situated on Eastgate.  This pub was present by 1782 and was closed and demolished in the 1860s with Louth Market Hall built on the site. In 1852 Robert Wilson, ostler at the New Reindeer inn, was charged by Charlotte Atkin with being the father of her illegitimate child.

Grade II Listed Market Hall. 1866 from Rogers and Marsden design. It was reputedly designed as a copy of Kings Cross Station. It was built at a cost of £7,000 on the site of the 'great house' first mentioned in 1621 and the New Reindeer Inn first mentioned in 1782 (Directory entries include; 1828 William Speed Rein Deer (new); 1835 Jonathan Wheatley Rein Deer (New); 1841 Edman Parker Rein Deer (New); 1856 C Clarke New Rein Deer; 1861 Dickinson Lewis New Reindeer inn.). The name commemorated above the doorway is one Samuel Trought, surgeon, magistrate and mayor of Louth in the mid-19th century. 1919 Kelly's tells us the clock on the tower was purchased by subscription, at a cost of about 100 guineas. The top spire was refurbished in 1954. Pevsner informs us that the four gargoyles were carved by T W Wallis.
