Rt. Carratt, of the Joiners’ Arms, Burton road, was charged with a similar
offence. One of the police stated that when he entered the house on Sunday
morning, about half-past twelve o’clock, he saw 6 men drinking, and told
Carratt that he ought to have closed at 11 o’clock. Carratt said, that five
of his own family were present, and the other three persons were waiting for
the "cow calving.” He and his family were waiting of the cow, and not
drinking. Business must be attended to, whether it was Sunday or work day.
The Magistrates did not think the cow a sufficient cause for keeping the
house open, and selling beer. Fined 5s. and 10s. costs. |
