The Fox & Hounds was situated at 33 Steep Hill. This pub closed in 1916 and is now occupied by Brown's Restaurant & Pie Shop. This pub was present by 1780, and there was a time (c1827 - 1849) when it was known as The Bessy Bedlam, after a famous racehorse. A plaque on the outside wall reads: 'Lawrence of Arabia 1888 - 1935. On this site in 1925 solder and author T E Lawrence lodged whilst serving at RAF Cranwell. Around this time he wrote his book Seven Pillars Of Wisdom, the legendary account of his leadership of Arab insurgence against the Turks in Syria during World War I'.
