Sun Hotel

The Sun Hotel was situated at 1 North Street. The original Sun Inn was demolished in 1845 with the current building replacing it. This has now also been demolished with a Travelodge built on the site.

A large, three-storey building named The Sun Hotel, at 1 North Street, Gainsborough. The building is of painted brick with a slate roof, and has decorative stone window lintels. It was built at some point in the early 18th century, and was originally in use as a private house. At some point in the later half of the 19th century, the building was extended and converted into a hotel. The exact date of this conversion is not known, but must have occurred prior to 1886, as the building is depicted in its current dimensions on the Ordnance Survey's Gainsborough Town Map, produced in that year. A photograph of the house, taken prior to its conversion, shows that originally attached to the southern gable of the house was a small, whitewashed, two-storey building, named the 'Sun Inn'. This building was subsequently demolished when the house was extended into its place.
