From the Manchester Evening News, 17th
June 1897 |
James R Hilton, landlord of the Bell
Inn, Swan Street, Oldham, was today fined £20 and costs for bookmaking, and
James Lees, clerk, £10 and costs for aiding and abetting. Detectives walked
in last night and captured papers showing 400 bets. Hilton had £100 in his
possession, half of which he said related to betting. Both prisoners pleaded
guilty. Lees had been previously convicted of a similar offence. |
