Situated on a bridge over the London to Glasgow main line, the closure of
the Railway Hotel, Golborne was a staggering loss to drinkers in Golborne
and from further afield. The pub was a treasure, all things to all men,
once described as "full of character and full of characters". The pub was
a free house, serving Theakstons Bitter and an ever changing selection of
guest beers. Noted for its quality and range of real ale, the pub was a
regular in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide and attracted regular customers from
St Helens, Croft, Newton le Willows etc. Phoenix, Bank Top and Coach House
were all popular beers.
The pub had a central bar with a pool and darts room to one side and a
lounge to the other. The lounge was popular with the real ale enthusiasts
and the coal fire gave an extra dimension in Winter. Friday nights were
noted for live bands - the Jalapenos being a particular attraction.
In the latter years the pub experimented with a micro brewery, but sadly
this venture seemed to herald the closure of the pub.
