The Mechanic Arms was situated at 85 High Street. This pub was present by 1891 and was rebuilt in its present form in 1901.  It survived into the 1970s, but is now closed and in use as an estate agent’s offices.  In its day it sold beer from the Ind Coope and Allsopp’s Breweries.
