Fortune Of War

Date of photo: 1900

The Fortune Of War was situated at 184 High Street (62 High Street following street renumbering). This pub changed its name to the Royal Lifeboat, c.1870 and was the first of the two peaked white weatherboard buildings on the left side of the road, in the above photo. The building was demolished in 1919 and replaced by the current gabled brick building in 1919, which is in retail use.
