Abbots Fireside

The Abbots Fireside was situated on the High Street. This pub originally
opened in 1451 as The Smithie's Arms. Reputedly visit by King Charles II
hiding from the Roundheads in a 'Priest's hole', and by the Duke of
Wellington. It was sold in 1671 and converted into four cottages, until
reverting to a pub in 1939. US and British troops frequented the pub when
preparing for D Day. Once again, rising costs are claimed as the reason for
the closure in 2025. |
