Model Tavern

The Model Tavern was situated at 54 Northgate.

Still have fond memories of the ‘Model’ from 1966. Mine hosts were Bob and Marion Benson when a fellow Kiwi and I boarded with them for a short time. Think we paid 7 guineas each for bed and breakfast on a weekly basis. Seem to recall that Bob was the breakfast cook – big, tasty breakfasts. Quickly made a lot of friends (some lifelong) from socialising in the pub. We landed jobs at Baxters, Sarre, and played rugby for Canterbury Remember watching England win the 1966 World Cup on a black and white TV while boarding privately in Shaftesbury Ave. Those were that days – thank you Model Tavern and all those who socialised in you!

John Copsey 1971 The Landlords were Ian & Diane Grey. They took it over in mid 1970 and it was a miss. I remember re-decorating in bright orange walls (oh the 70s!!!) It had two bars and they offered nice food. Beer was Whitbread and Red Barrel
