The Royal Bell was situated at 175 High Street. |
|
This was a known coaching stop on the route to London, and
was referred to in Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice:
"Oh! Your uncle! He keeps a man-servant, does he? I am very glad you have
somebody who thinks of these things. Where shall you change horses? Oh!
Bromley, of course. If you mention my name at the Bell, you will be attended
to." |

Back in early 1970s, there was a Berni Inn
Steakhouse operating on the first floor of the Bell. With a pal we had a
steak dinner there one evening. Berni Inns could be relied upon for serving
good quality food. |
