The Chequers

The Chequers was situated at 35 HIgh Street. This grade-II listed pub was present by 1776 when the publican was Robert Wells. It closed c1890 and is now in residential use.


Listed building details:
Mid-late C18 house. Gault brick with tiled, mansard roof and end stacks. Two storeys and attics. Two dormers with horizontal sliding sashes with glazing bars. Symmetrical elevation of three flush frame hung sashes with glazing bars. Two original splayed bays with similar windows on either side of  central doorway in segmental arch. Moulded doorcase and later panelled door. The outshut at the rear has been rebuilt. Inside the details in the ground floor rooms are mainly of the late C18 or early C19.
