The Clarendon Arms was situated
on Redhall Lane. This pub is now used as a Prime steak house. |

It must be getting on for 20 yrs that I
visited The Clarendon Arms since it closed for an extended period for a huge
re-vamp which involved both inside and out. The building itself was
redeveloped to include an upper floor and space for the kitchen area to
avail food. The outside was landscaped with a brick surround which curled
round following the curvature of the road and included a gulley to bed
flora. I remember the Clarendon Arms as it was only vaguely but it was a
delightful characterful english country pub that took you back in time to a
place steeped in history. The walls and exposed oak beams evoked yarns of
bygone days when farmers might have met to share stories of their day; a
place where village gossip and old wives tales got their legs. Charming it
was. I was shocked when it closed and when it was redeveloped I felt it had
been robbed of its spirit and was as soul-less and clinical as an exhibit
out of a Hornby model rail kit. But today I revisited it for the first time
in a long time .I was glad it still retained moreorless its outer visage and
at least is still trading and open as hospitality. And as I sat there
drinking my tea in the garden at the front. Glimpses of former times flashed
through my mind. The side doorway - still in the position it was all those
year ago. It was a trip down memory lane. Memories that will last forever. |
