The Checkers was situated at 28 Whitehorse Street. This pub was established before 1839 and closed in around 1990.  The premises are now in commercial use. This was the last pub in the UK to use the American spelling of the word.

My grandad "Dave Tug Wilson" Cousin of George Wilson run the pub with his wife Betty from around the late 50s to 1985..i spent many nights sleeping upstairs as a child wile the family was downstairs drinking. My Grandad Dave got George and Betty the job as landlord Through the local brewery Simpsons of Baldock who where supplying the pub beer and ales at the time. My Grandad was Landlord of The Yorkshire Grey in Stevenage and helped teach George and Betty the trade before they started the job..
