Inn. late C18 front to C17 core.
Stucco; Welsh slate roof; C19 brick multiple stack to left rear.
Exterior: 3 storeys and cellar; 3-window range: early C20 plain sashes in
earlier cases with beaded reveals; 3/6 sashes over; moulded coving to eaves.
Late C19 inn front with half-glazed central double-doors in panelled
reveals, flanked by plate-glass windows in moulded cases; flanked by moulded
wood Ionic pilasters; square-headed courtyard entrance to right, with plain
pilasters and plank door; moulded fascia-board and modillioned hood with
fluted consoles, overall. Passage to rear has wood panelling to right; 6/6
sash, and part-glazed C19 panelled door to left, under jetty, with early
C20, 2/2 sash over; segmental arches; storeybands; 6/6 sash and 2-light
casement over, to rear; gable of wing displays C17 timber-framing with brick
infill. Further wing of C18 brickwork with sillband, to moulded wood 2nd
floor storeyband; roughcast over; C18, 10/10 sash and various sashes and
casements; segmental arches; roughcast gable; C18 brick stack; shallow pitch
slate roof. Further stable wing with various lights and casements, under C20
plain tile roof; further wing with steep pitched corrugated-asbestos roof
displays mutilated timber-frame.
Interior: C17 dogleg staircase with turned balusters and moulded string and
newel, with some missing balusters to attic flight; C17 barleysugar twist
balusters to rear stair. Attic: exposed purlins; exposed C17 box-framing;
two C19 plank doors; queen strut truss. 2nd floor: five 4-panel doors; C19,
6-panel door; panelled risers to windows with architraves. 1st floor:
exposed framing with diagonal braces, probably of No.1 King Street (qv);
chamfered ceiling beams. Ground floor: exposed ceiling joists and beam, to
rear range; C19 fireplace with 4-centred arch; C17 panelled dado; ceiling
cornice; corner-stack. Cellar: medieval octagonal pillar and capital, under
massive beam; masonry lining and stackbase; plank door; pointed arch to
blocked doorhead. |
