The George Hotel was situated at 94 High Street. This pub closed in 1934, was demolished in 1956 and replaced with a bank building

There was an inn on this site in the middle ages there being reference to “New Inn of Marke Le Fayre” in the 14th century. It may have also been called the Moon until becoming the George . It was the major coaching inn of the city. The hotel was compulsorily purchased in 1934 for road widening schemes, and used as offices until demolition
