The Chequers was situated at 107-109 High Street. The Chequers was an ancient inn and (according to the Victoria County History) “... It was pulled down at the end of the eighteenth century when the famous proprietor Dibsdale went from the 'Chequer' to the 'George'...” Replaced by the above building which is now in mixed cafe/retail use.
