Fighting Cocks

The Fighting Cocks was situated at 26 Main Road and is to be demolished to make way for a housing development.
This pub has now been fully developed into houses. However they have kept a nice 'swinging' pub sign in keeping with the original pub and setting.
Richard Marmoy (May 2010)
My dad took me to The Fighting Cocks on my ninth birthday. We went to London with my family, and a school friend, the day before but on my actual birthday he took me to this pub because I loved the trampolines that were in the pub garden. It was just him and me. I'm 50 now but I remember that day so clearly. Later that night, in bed, every time I closed my eyes I felt as though I were still bouncing. My dad died two months later. I don't live in the Basingstoke area anymore - although I have family that still do - but it's still so sad to think that this pub is no longer there.

I live in Tadley since 1971. One of my first jobs was working as a bar maid at the now closed Fighting Cocks Pub Tadley. Peter and Mary Royal were landlady lord. Mary passed circa ages 54. Peter remained in Tadley died circa ages 94 I think. Both buried like many Tadley folk at St Peter's church cemetery. We had great timed then and one of the first places we met Tadley folk builders bricklayer who found my brickie husband his first job here. We also had some great lockins !!!! Gone are the good times.
