The Cat

The Cat (also known as "The Romping
Cat") was a small beerhouse on Fairlawn Road and the 1871 census lists
George Sumpter as the keeper. In 1869 James West of Tadley was accused of
stealing two hens and twelve chickens, the property of George Sumpter of the
"Romping Cat, Tadley". Apparently Mr West had been drinking in the Fighting
Cocks until 11 o'clock and was later seen with the "fowls under his arm".
Back in those days hens were adults and chickens were their young, hence the
popular pub name "Hen and Chickens". Closure date for the Cat is unknown but
late 19th or early 20th century is likely. The site was cleared in the 1970s
for housing. |
