Commonly known as the Railway Carriers
at 16 Greetham Street, Southsea, the club's proper name was the Railway
Carriers Tavern. My parents, Fred and Doris Chamberlain, tenanted this
hostelry from 1951 to 1956. From the upstairs flat, my brother David and I
could watch the steam trains en route to the harbour station, and jot down
the engines' numbers in our Ian Allen Trainspotters books. Once upon a time,
I had a number of photos of the interior and the exterior of the pub, but
sadly they have become casualties of time. The pub had three excellent darts
teams, one of which was a ladies team. I travelled to my school, Southern
Grammar in Albert Road, (headmaster, the fearsome Mr Mills) on my bicycle
each day, until I left in 1953 to commence an electrical engineering
apprenticeship at the now defunct company, Shields and Marshall's in Lake
Road. The pub's clientele regulars consisted mainly of RN and RM personnel.
There was a great deal of friendly rivalry at times, but my dad, a former
Army MP, was more than able to keep the peace. |
