Carpenters Arms

The Carpenters Arms was situated at 34 Craven Street. This pub opened in 1866 when Welsh's Lion Brewery took at a lease on this private residence at £15 p.a. In 1911 it was refused a licence for which the owners at the time, Winchester Brewery, received compensation of £725. It subsequently became a private residence and was demolished in the 1930s under a slum clearance scheme. Council flats were built on the site in the 1950s. In the photo above it is the building with the lady leaning against the wall
