The Shant

Date of photo: c1938

The Shant was situated on Winchester Road. This pub later changed its name to The Watercress Line. Closed c1990, it is now used as an Indian restaurant called The Star.

The Shant got it's name from Shanty, as it was built as living quaters for workers building the Mid Hants Railway, which is a few hundred yards from the building. It dates from about 1864.
